POPHAM
There is no known element which could explain the first syllable. Ekwall
suggested that a short form of Old English 'popel'='pebble' (which is continued
by Hampshire dialect 'popple' (Cope 1883: 69)) may have existed, and Gover noted
that since the place is on the chalk, the reference must be to flints. In fact
Popham manor farm is on a patch of clay-with-flints surrounded by otherwise
loamy soil; so Ekwall and Gover may well have been right that it is 'pebble
estate'.
